About Some Korean Martial Arts

Taekwondo (also spelled tae kwon do or taekwon-do) is a martial art and combat sport originating in Korea. Having become one of the most widely practiced martial arts in the world, it is the national sport of Korea and one form of sparring, shihap kyeorugi, is an Olympic sporting event.
In Korean, derived from hanja, tae (跆) means to kick or strike with the foot"; kwon (拳) means "fist or to strike with the hand"; and do (道) means "way". Hence, taekwondo is loosely translated as "the way of the foot and hand". Taekwondo's popularity has resulted in the divergent evolution of the martial art. As with many other martial arts, taekwondo is a combination of combat technique, self-defense, sport, exercise, entertainment, and philosophy.

Hapkido (also spelled hap ki do or hapki-do) is a dynamic and somewhat eclectic Korean martial art. In the Korean language, hap means "harmony", "coordinated", or "joining"; ki describes internal energy, spirit, strength, or power; and do means "way" or "art". Thus, hapkido, which shares the same Chinese characters with aikido (合気道), translates literally to "joining-energy-way", but it is most often rendered as "the way of coordinating energy" or "the way of coordinated power."
Hapkido prides itself on effective self-defense and as such employs joint locks, pressure points, throws, kicks, and other strikes. Hapkido is an authentic Asian martial art of total self-defense; it deals with countering the techniques of other martial arts as well as common "unskilled" attacks.
Although hapkido contains both long range fighting and infighting techniques, the end of most situations is to get near for a close strike, lock, or throw. Hapkido emphasizes circular motion, non-resisting movements, and control of the opponent. Practitioners seek to gain advantage through footwork and body positioning to employ leverage, avoiding the use of strength against strength.
Hoshinsul: Ho is to protect; Shin the body; Sul technique or technology. Hoshinsul is the self-defense technology that is part of certain systems of Taekwondo and Hapkido. Hoshinsul usually is associated with learning self-defense and applying the techniques to real situations or senarios.

Kumdo is a modern martial art of fencing, the Korean equivalent of Japanese kendo. It is also romanized as kǒmdo, gumdo, or geomdo. The name means "the way of the sword," using the same Chinese characters as kendo. The main differences between kendo and kumdo are stylistic. Kumdo practitioners generally favor a dynamic style of play, focusing on using fast and aggressive small motion strikes to create openings for attacks. Kendo practitioners however, tend to focus on the perfect single strike, waiting patiently to find an opening and the correct timing to land an attack typically larger in motion than a kumdo stylist. Kumdo practitioners in Korea now number over 400,000 and is considered the second most popular martial art in Korea today, with Taekwondo being the most popular and Yudo and Hapkido tied for a distant third.
